Israel Attacks Lebanon: Iran FM Says Israel's Attacks in Lebanon Must End Under Ceasefire Deal

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a forceful statement regarding the ceasefire agreement, asserting that Israeli military operations in Lebanon must cease as part of the deal reached with the United States. His remarks, posted on social media platform X, emphasized Iran's interpretation of the ceasefire terms and issued an ultimatum to the American government regarding its position on Israeli military activities.

"The Iran–U.S. Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the U.S. must choose—ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both," Araghchi declared in his post. The statement represents a hardening of Iran's position and suggests that the disagreement between Tehran and Washington extends beyond a simple misunderstanding to fundamental differences about the ceasefire's substance and enforceability.

Araghchi's remarks indicate that Iran views the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon as a direct violation of the ceasefire agreement. From the Iranian perspective, the US cannot claim to have achieved a ceasefire with Tehran while simultaneously allowing or tacitly supporting Israeli military operations that contradict the spirit and terms of the agreement. This position puts enormous pressure on the Biden administration to either constrain Israeli military action or face accusations of bad faith from Iran.

The foreign minister's use of stark language—presenting the US with a binary choice between a genuine ceasefire or continued war—suggests that Iran's patience with the agreement is limited. The statement serves notice that if US-backed or at least US-tolerated Israeli operations continue in Lebanon, Iran may take steps to abandon or escalate beyond the ceasefire framework. This escalation threat underscores the fragility of the negotiated agreement.

Israeli military operations in Lebanon have indeed continued with significant intensity since the ceasefire announcement. Reports indicate that Israeli forces have conducted numerous strikes across Lebanese territory, resulting in substantial casualties and destruction. These operations appear to contradict any meaningful ceasefire arrangement, particularly if such an arrangement was intended to be comprehensive across the region.

The disagreement between Iran and the US over the ceasefire's scope has now become a public relations battle, with both sides seeking to shape international perception of who is responsible for the agreement's potential collapse. Araghchi's public statement is part of Iran's effort to position itself as the aggrieved party attempting to uphold the ceasefire while the US and Israel undermine it.

The coming hours and days will be critical in determining whether the ceasefire can be salvaged or whether the conflict will continue to escalate. The pressure on US diplomatic efforts is now intense, as officials must navigate between their Israeli allies and their Iranian counterparts while attempting to maintain the credibility of any negotiated agreements.
